Five Lakes Hotel, Golf Country Club & Spa, Essex

Courses fit for champions

Five Lakes

Five Lakes Hotel, Golf, Country Club & Spa hosts two contrasting and mature 18 hole parkland courses which have gained an enviable reputation in this part of the world. The resort's courses are kept in superb condition all year round and each offers a variety of golfing challenges. The gentle undulation of the courses make walking easy and the course architecture combines lakes, well placed bunkers, mature and new trees with hedgerows, all of which contribute to the hotel's enviable reputation.

The Lakes Course
The course designer, Neil Coles MBE, aimed to enhance the rolling landscape of the surrounding countryside by creating a course with interesting features and landscaping. The tees and greens are built to USGA green specification and vary in design, height and undulation. Water is the predominant feature of this course coming into play on nine of the 18 holes with the fairways benefiting from an irrigation system. The generous fairways, large greens and water hazards provide a great test for golfers and ensure every club in the bag is used.
18 holes. Par 72. 6767 yards. Parkland with lakes.

The Links Course
Completed in 1975, the Links Course has matured over the years, creating its’ own challenges with plush greens that bring the importance of the short game into play. The Links Course presents a very different challenge to the Lakes, testing precision to the limit with narrow fairways and strategically placed water hazards, sand bunkers and well-guarded greens. Accuracy is the key to success on this course.

Golf & Spa

Belton Woods, Lincolnshire

Belton Woods is a PGA championship approved venue ad let's be honest, a golfers paradise. With three challenging courses to play and fantastic facilities, you won't find anywhere else like it in the East Midlands. This is golf at its best!

Lakes Course

Belton Woods Golf

A beautiful course peppered with water hazards. This par 72 Championship course can be a tricky course for high handicappers, with lakes guarding the approaches to many greens. Course management and shot placement is key here. The holes are long and the fairways tight, so anything wayward from the tee could result in you having to lay up in front of the water. The 9th hole is over 600 yards, one of the longest in Europe.

Woodside Course
The Woodside contrasts with the Lakes course in many ways, it is well worth playing both if you are here on a weekend golf break. The shorter Woodside course, 6,623 yards long, runs along the forested estate, spectacular at any time of year, especially in the autumn. The undulating fairways and natural hazards need careful negotiation, this is a real 'thinkers' course for high handicappers and pros alike.

Red Arrows Academy Course
A Par-3 course where club selection is really important, as the holes offer different challenges. This is a great 9-hole par three course attached to the golf Academy, with a range of holes from 92 to 186 yards.

78 strokes and you're up there with the best
Nestling in the hotel's 220 acres of private grounds, Hellidon Lakes' championship course offers challenges aplenty for beginners and scratch golfers alike. As you might expect, many of the 27 holes feature water hazards, albeit with a choice of challenging carries over, or safer routes around the numerous lakes; on the par 5 twelfth, for instance, two long shots over the water can end in triumph or disaster, whereas three shots along the zigzag route can yield a solid par.

On your way round, you can't help but notice the diverse flora and fauna that flourish around the greens and fairways. Badgers, deer, foxes and a multitude of birds blend happily into the surroundings, the result of a deliberate policy to preserve large tracts of the valley as their natural habitat. The result is a truly exclusive blend of 'back to nature' scenery and the highest of year round playing standards on large, well kept greens and well-drained fairways.
