About Phil and his 5000 mile charity challenge

Phil Swanston lives and works in Old Oxted, Surrey, where he is well known as the downstairs bar manager in the popular Crown Inn.

From the 5th of June 2010 Phil will be taking on the mammoth challenge of cycling 5,000 miles: The entire coastline of mainland Britain. Phil is doing this in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Phil’s mother was diagnosed with this cruel disease over six years ago and he has experienced first hand the devastating effects this disease has on its victims, their families and carers.

To meet the task, Phil will be covering an average of 65 miles per day for three months, solo and unsupported. The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia. The money raised will go towards the Society’s stated aims of giving support to sufferers and their carer’s and the search for a cure.

Phil hopes to raise in excess of £20,000 over the course of his journey. He is looking for sponsorship help from both individuals and local companies.

To keep costs down, Phil is also trying to find accommodation on his trip. Should anyone know of friends or family living on, or near the coast, who could possibly provide a night’s accommodation, it would be very much appreciated.

About the Alzheimer's Society

700,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia; more than half have Alzheimer’s disease. In less than 20 years nearly a million people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051. Alzheimer’s Society campaigns for and champions the rights of people living with dementia and the millions who care for them. Alzheimer’s Society works in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Thank You Barceló Torquay Imperial Hotel

The Barceló Torquay Imperial have kindly offered to provide Phil Swanston with well needed accommodation on the West Country leg of his unsupported cycle ride around the coastline of Britain. Phil will be staying at the hotel on Wednesday 9th June 2010, so if you are there too, why not buy him a beer, or better still sponsor his endeavours!

Thank You The Park Royal

The Park Royal kindly provided Phil Swanston with well needed accommodation on the North West leg of his unsupported cycle ride around the coastline of Britain.

Phil is doing this epic bike ride in aid of Alzheimers and unfortunately his mother died of the disease whilst Phil was part way through his journey. Phil marked the spot he had reached and went home for the funeral, but has now returned to the exact location and has continued on his amazing journey.

Phil stayed at the hotel on Monday 19th July 2010 and was looked after royally as you would expect! Many thanks to Jacquie Hanson and all at the hotel who gave Phil such a warm reception and saw him on his way suitably rested and refreshed.

Thank You
